(Empire magazine
- September 1998) Unforgettable * Interceptor
Total recall: In nutshell:
Two contestants yomp around the English countryside
(inevitably the environs of market towns such as Haye On Wye) while strapped into
state-of-the-art comms gear and wearing backpacks stuffed full of cash and try to meet
each other - guided by the well-meaning but tragically untalented former tennis star
Croft. "The greatest challenge you will have face," she would inform them (just
after giving potted history of the town), "is the Interceptor." Said Interceptor
was a bleached blond bloke in a leather mac armed with a gunship-style helicopter and
infrared gun which could lock the backpacks ("It works like the remote control on
your television," Croft would inform the audience to lessen
technofear.) |
Was it any good?
Dementedly brilliant. But the highlight was the
Interceptor himself (actor Sean O'Kane) engaging in "amusing" quippage with his
sinister helicopter pilot ("Mikey", who addressed him as "Guvn'r");
yells of "I like it!" at every opportunity and did an impressive impression of a
screeching "fish eagle" which on one occasion almost reduced a contestant to
tears. "The Interceptor's following me on a horse...and he's really evil" one
gasping player memorably shouted. Other highlights included the inevitable local who would
give the game away - "I need to find a boat," contestants would ask.
"Arrr....there should be one ready for you down there," the confused
straw-sucking bumpkin would respond, thus revealing that the whole thing was rigged. Also
worth watching: the moment of truth when the boxes turned out to be locked and contestants
went home, in a very real sense, "empty-handed".
