"I thoroughly enjoyed myself." she
says. "It was like living in a fantasy world. Such fun." Croft has led a
fun-filled existence. Excelling at school sports ("O-levels were not for me"),
she saw "the whole world at such a young age - America, Australia, Japan - and just
took it for granted", while, apparantly, encountering not a flicker of envy from her
peers. "I had a lot of friends who'd help me catch up when I got back to
school," she states. "I think they were quite proud."
Did she miss out
on a usual 15 year old's pursuits? "I did, but I didn't mind. I felt different, going
off travelling and everything. I didn't want to go to the parties where they were all [she
wrinkles the small brown nose] smoking. |
I wasn't interested in all that. Still not, really. I'm not into going to nightclubs,
going out late." She is still not into tennis, either, even though her sister and
mother, a former air hostess, are keen players. "I'm really competitive and I still
imagine myself playing top-class players. I either go all out to win, or I get bored and
give up after 10 minutes. I'm sure it'll get easier as I get older. I'll start to forget
what happened before. I'd like to put all my knowledge of tennis into use, start a few
kids off and own a tennis centre, but that's for future years."
So far Croft has
given her future little thought. "It's wiser not to plan too far ahead," she
says , "although you should set yourself goals and ambitions, but not too high
otherwise you'll get disappointed."
